IONOS vs GoDaddy Website Builder (2026): Two Renewal Traps Compared

IONOS vs GoDaddy is a contest between two renewal traps, and in October 2026 only one of them shows its whole shape. IONOS prints its follow-on price: MyWebsite Now Plus is $1 a month for year one, then $20. GoDaddy's US builder page now sells only its Airo AI Builder plans, from $9.99 a month billed annually, and it prints no renewal rate at all. So IONOS wins year one by a wide margin and is the only side whose three-year bill you can work out before you pay. Prices are from both US plan pages, read on 9 October 2026.

IONOS suits a buyer who wants a cheap first year with a domain and a business inbox, and who will act before month 13. GoDaddy suits a buyer who specifically wants AI-led page building with monthly credits, and who gets the renewal price in writing first. Anyone who wants a low, predictable bill over three or four years should look at neither.

Two traps, two geometries (now with GoDaddy's numbers)

The IONOS trap is deep and narrow: an almost-free first year, then a cliff. Plus goes from $1 to $20 a month, Starter from $6 to $14, and both figures sit on the plan page under the headline price. You can see the drop before you jump.

GoDaddy's current trap is a different shape. Its US website builder page lists four Airo AI Builder tiers: a Free plan with 50 AI credits a month, Starter at $9.99 a month, Professional at $24.99 and Ultimate at $99.99, all billed annually. The page adds that an annual plan carries an extra discount on your first year. It does not say what year two costs. So the entry price is visible, the discount is acknowledged, and the follow-on figure is missing.

One scoping note before the numbers: this is an economics matchup, so GoDaddy stays at summary level here (plans, prices, positioning) rather than a feature tour.

Year one: IONOS by a mile

IONOS Plus costs $12 for the first year, and it is not a hollow tier: 50 GB of storage, a 12 GB mailbox, up to 200 pages, a free first-year domain, a professional email address, SSL, AI text and image tools and online booking. Starter is $72 for the year without the AI and booking tools. GoDaddy's cheapest paid Airo plan, Starter, is $119.88 for the year at $9.99 a month; Professional is $299.88.

On year-one cost alone this is not close. IONOS Plus costs a tenth of GoDaddy's entry plan and comes with a working business mailbox. GoDaddy's Free tier costs nothing, but it is a credit-limited starting point rather than a like-for-like plan, and we could not confirm from GoDaddy's own page what it lets you publish.

Years two and three: the bill arrives

From month 13, IONOS Plus renews at $20 a month: $240 a year, and $492 over three years. Starter's gentler curve, $6 to $14, totals $408. Those totals can be computed on day one because IONOS prints every input.

GoDaddy's three-year total cannot be computed from its own page. Some third-party reviews quote Airo renewal rates, but GoDaddy's plan page does not print a renewal, so we do not repeat those figures as fact. The practical step is simple: before paying, ask GoDaddy for the renewal price of the exact plan in your cart, and add it to your budget for years two and three.

Which GoDaddy are you comparing?

Older comparisons, ours included until this update, priced GoDaddy's classic Websites + Marketing builder. GoDaddy's US website-builder page no longer shows those plans: on 9 October 2026 it showed only the Airo AI Builder tiers. Classic customers still exist. GoDaddy's own help article on telling its builders apart (Help 42917, read on 13 October 2026) now lists three: the classic Websites + Marketing builder, Airo AI Builder and Airo for WordPress. For a new buyer, Airo is what GoDaddy is selling. Its pricing is built around AI credits: 150 a month on Starter, 300 on Professional and 750 on Ultimate, expiring at the end of each billing cycle. Professional also lets you publish up to 10 sites or apps. If AI-led building is the reason you are buying, that is GoDaddy's real pitch; if it is not, you are paying for credits you will not use.

What's inside the IONOS box

IONOS's builder is MyWebsite Now in three tiers. Starter covers 10 GB, a 2 GB mailbox and 10 pages. Plus adds 50 GB, a 12 GB mailbox, 200 pages and the AI toolkit. Pro ($17 a month for year one against a $32 list price, no renewal printed) adds unlimited storage and pages, a 50 GB mailbox and rankingCoach Standard. Every tier ships the same strong core: a free first-year domain, SSL and a professional email address.

The editor is the weak flank: dated, with limited design freedom. Selling needs IONOS's separate Online Store plans, which renew harder than the builder (Plus goes from $1 to $32 a month) but state no transaction fees. The decision framework

• Building this year, deciding next year? IONOS Plus: $12 buys twelve months of a real site with domain and email. Set a reminder for month eleven.
• Keeping the site on IONOS long term? Price it at renewal: $168 a year on Starter, $240 on Plus. Judge it at those numbers, not the teaser.
• Sold on AI-led building? GoDaddy Airo, with the renewal figure for your exact plan written down before checkout.

Bottom of the box

This matchup has a real product on both sides, and a real trap on both sides. IONOS is the rational year-one buy and the better-documented long-term one, because its numbers are printed where an auditor can read them. GoDaddy is defensible for buyers who want Airo's AI credits and confirm the renewal first. The only indefensible move is signing either contract without the renewal figure in hand.
